CHESAPEAKE BAY BRIDGE TUNNEL

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: 17.6 mile bridge-tunnel over mouth of Chesapeake Bay. North end island refuge for migrating water fowl. Scenic views from bridge, and pier, of the Bay and sea going vessels.
PARKING: 3 designated accessible parking spaces. Located west parking lot 25 feet from entrance. Parking space 13 feet wide. Accessible aisle 1 foot wide.
TYPES OF PATHS TO OR AROUND ATTRACTION: 4 to 5 feet wide paved with barrier for safety - 2 sides. Paths accessible to persons with mobility impairments. Length of paths 250 feet
ENTRANCE: Located 100 feet from entrance with double doors. 2 glass entry doors, 36 inches wide, easily open out with clearly marked grip handle located 38 inches above floor.
PUBLIC REST ROOMS: Located in 50 feet corridor, 43 inches wide, adjacent to dining area. Doors 33 inches wide, open in. Turns to enter. Accessible stalls have doors opening out, and handrails. 19 inch toilet seat height, 36 inches between commode and wall. Sink height 28 inches. Accessible stall checked regularly for obstructions. Unisex or companion assisted rest rooms available.
PUBLIC TELEPHONE: Accessible phones 150 feet North of designated accessible parking, west side. Lowered phones. Numbers are raised.
SPECIAL SERVICES:
For guests with visual impairments, there are signs in large print, with contrasting background, printed on a non-glossy surface.
FOOD AND BEVERAGE FACILITIES: Located inside 3 foot door, 25 feet from parking. 25 tables for guests in wheelchairs located throughout service area. Tables overlooking Chesapeake Bay. Table height 30 inches. Aisles between tables 42 inches wide. Menus printed in contrasting colors.
GIFT SHOP: Aisles 34 inches wide. Counter height varies. Aisles clear of temporary displays. Shirts, Virginia items, and collectables.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Accepted credit cards: V, MC, DS. No admission fee. Hours: Summer 6AM-10PM; Winter 7AM-6PM. Outside toilets: 75 feet from 3rd handicaped parking space. Low seat, no rails. Since not accessible-locked in day time - open at 10PM. On level, 42 inches wide access. Emergency pull offs. Rest stop at north toll gate going north has accessible facilities.

 

EASTERN SHORE OF VIRGINIA NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: On 1700 acres at the tip of the Delmarva Peninsula, this refuge is a congregating point for migratory birds and butterflies to feed before continuing their journey. The 250 species of birds change with the seasons.
PARKING: 2 wheelchair accessible parking spaces.
TYPES OF PATHS TO OR AROUND PARK AND ATTRACTION: Concrete walkway from parking lot. Large gravel in parking lot. Paths are fine gravel in refuge area, do not have steep grades which would require assistance for persons in wheelchairs.
ENTRANCE TO VISITOR CENTER: Front of building. Entry doors, 30 inches wide, easily open out with 12 inch pull handle located 36 inches above floor. All on one level.
PUBLIC REST ROOMS: Left of entrance. Doors 35 inches wide, open in. Turns to enter. Accessible stalls have 34 inch wide doors opening in, handrails. 19 inch toilet seat height, 10 inches between commode and wall. Sink height is 32 inches. Accessible stall checked regularly for obstructions.
SPECIAL SERVICES:
For guests with hearing impairments, there are tours in American Sign Language, and written scripts available. 5 videos with closed captioning.
For guests with visual impairments, there is a touch table with natural artifacts, a Refuge brochure in braille and documents in large print on non-glossy surface.
For guests with mobility impairments, accessible trail is 0.5 miles long. Wildlife trail is accessible and winds through a World War II bunker. This trail goes from a marsh habitat to woodlands and includes an overlook of the salt marsh for bird watching. Photo blind with ramp overlooking pond for photography opportunities. In the visitor center habitat exhibits have “peepholes”, accessible to wheelchair users. Touch table is 30 inches off floor with knee room for wheelchair users. Observation window overlooking water has telescope and binoculars. Displays are 40 inches and have clear glass. Auditorium has 36 inches wide doors.
SPECIAL PROGRAMS: There are special guide books.
GIFT SHOP:
Aisles are 7 feet wide. Clerks assist customers with special needs. Aisles clear of temporary displays.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: No admission fee. Hours of operation: Visitor Center 9AM-4PM, Refuge, Sunrise to Sunset. White-tailed deer available for archers and gun hunting. Call for information.

 

KIPTOPEKE STATE PARK

Directions: Located 3 miles North of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. Turn West on Route 704. Park entrance 0.5 mile.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: A 375 acre park at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. Offering full-service picnicking, swimming, fishing, hiking and environmental education. 1000 feet fishing pier is 24 hour accessible in-season, with modified hours in off-season. 4 designated parking spaces, and concrete walkway around pier. Dual lane boat ramp is 24 hour accessible in-season, with modified hrs. in off-season. 3 designated parking spaces, and accessible ramp to 120 feet courtesy dock.
PARKING: 8 wheelchair accessible parking spaces.
TYPES OF PATHS: 2 of 4 dune walkways are accessible, one approx. 1,100 feet long and the second descending over a 20 feet high bluff. Paths are packed dirt on an old road bed,with no steep grades. Trails are 1 mile long.
PUBLIC REST ROOMS: Located at waterfront. Doors 36 inches wide, open out. Turns to enter. Accessible stalls have 36 inch wide doors opening out, and handrails. Wheelchair accessible toilet 19 inches high with room for lateral transfer. Sink height 34 inches. Pipes wrapped. Accessible stall checked regularly for obstructions.

PICNIC AREAS: Two 20 feet by 40 feet shelters. Picnic area has several 28 inches high tables for guests in wheelchairs. Aisle width varies. 5 feet concrete walkways to each shelter and new accessible rest room.

CAMPGROUND

BATH HOUSE AND REST ROOMS: Located main campground (sites 1-94 and primitive sites 95-141). Doors are 36 inches wide, and open out. Turns must be made to enter. Wheelchair accessible toilet 19 inches high with room for lateral transfer. Accessible stalls have 36 inch wide doors opening out, and handrails. Sink height is 29 inches. Roll-in shower. Accessible stall checked regularly for obstructions.
DESCRIPTION OF CAMP SITE: Camping spaces have electrical, water, sewer and cable TV hook-ups. Personnel are available to assist with hook-up. Pull through sites are available. Other amenities include: level grass sites and wheelchair accessible sites, including pedestal grill and accessible picnic table at 3 different sites.
PUBLIC TELEPHONE: Wheelchair accessible phone located at Kiptopeke Drive at Bird Banding parking lot. Amplified public phone.
PICNIC AREAS: Picnic areas have one table for guests in wheelchairs, 28 inches high located at Gazebo. The aisles between the tables vary. The paths to and within the picnic areas are grass.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Accepted credit cards V and MC. Admission fees. Hours of operation 8AM-Dusk.
